It’s 11:30 at night.
I’ve been at my desk, on the phone, answering emails and messages since I woke up at 8am. I’m still surrounded by unlisted product, unfin
ished prep work, and unshipped items.
I look down at my Priority list for this day with the sinking realization that I’ve crossed just ONE thing off this list of 20 things, and ADDED another 6 items.
It’s at this moment I realize…. there is no way I can continue to run my business in this manner without having a physical and emotional breakdown, and I seriously consider the option of “just getting a real job.”
THIS is the moment that changed my business… and my life.
I KNEW at that moment, that the ONLY way I would be able to have the freedom I desperately desire AND grow my business so that it doesn’t OWN me, is to have automated, and semi-automated systems, that I could plug OTHER people OR technology into.
And in so doing, I can increase the VALUE of my business, should I ever decide to sell it.
It is on this night, after 2 weeks of 16 hour days, that I…FIRED MYSELF.
I sat down with a pen and notebook and started listing ALL of the things I do:
From product research and evaluation to sourcing, supplier communication, reordering, bookkeeping, team building and management, account management, and everything in between.
After writing this list, I practically laugh out-loud as it becomes glaringly obvious how ludicrous it is for ME to actually be doing ALL of these things!
So I revisit my book library and rediscover the eMyth Revisted by Michael Gerber and dive into the book from cover-to-cover till I literally fall asleep at 3am.
I wake up the next day with renewed purpose, enthusiasm and resolve. Because THIS is the day I decided I will create a business based on SYSTEMS.
It was that day that I embarked on an exploration of discovery.
